Working out with Weed – Sativa or Indica?

The Cannabis Workout : Sativa or Indica

It’s no secret that cannabis has very positive effects on an athlete in terms of muscle recovery. While it still isn’t used as a mainstream measure to help improve muscle recovery, that should not dissuade athletes from delving into its effects.

But one thing that we tend to overlook is the fact that cannabis cannot be treated the same way that we treat over-the-counter medication. You don’t simply take any type of weed in the same way that you simply walk up to your pharmacy and ask for anything for headache relief.

There are certain factors that you need to consider if you want to get the best results out of your workout-cannabis combination. For the sake of brevity, we’re going to stick with the most important factors: what you need from your workout and the strain of cannabis you need to achieve that result.

You Need to Figure Out What Exactly You Need from Your Workout

This basically means that you need to see what area you lack in. One good example is when you lack the motivation to hit the gym or you could also lack the energy to do your routines properly. Both of these will adversely affect your gains.

On the other end of the spectrum, you could also have a difficult time cooling down after a workout and thus, you can barely get any rest. This is even truer when you’re the type of person who prefers to work out at the end of your day. This, too, would affect your gains because you might have difficulty getting quality sleep — if you get any at all.

The Cannabis Strain That You Need

As previously mentioned, it’s not as simple as taking any old weed that you could legally get your hands on. You need to understand the cannabis strain that you’re going to take in order for you to get the best results from your exercise-cannabis combination. This is apart from the fact that you also need to make sure that you’re getting your supplies from a credible source, like Harvest Dispensaries for example that has locations around the country.

There are two general strains of cannabis:

  • Sativa – which is proven to have the stimulating effects that weed is most popularly known for.
  • Indica – which is very effective at calming the body.

With this information, you can then come to the conclusion that:

If you need motivation to work out, or if you need more energy to do your routines, you’re going to want to take sativa because it acts as a stimulant and will surely boost both your enthusiasm as well as your energy. This will allow you to work out hard enough to trigger muscle hypertrophy.  Sativa’s for working out are not only poplular for giving your energy, but the have also been known to create mental focus, say for doing heavy weigths or conentrating for a power lift.

If you need help winding down after an intense workout, then you need to take indica, which is very effective in calming the body down. This is going to help you get quality rest which will facilitate better muscle recovery.  Indica’s also have a calming effect on the central nervous system and help in repairing small muscle tears created with when working out.  Anti-swelling, or anti-inflammatory effects of indica’s can help the body heal and repair quicker for some athletes.

Even as cannabis has been proven to enhance the way that athletes train and recover, it should not be treated like a silver bullet or a talismanic verse that solves your problems on its own. For best results, make sure to have a balanced diet and to perform proper techniques during your workouts.  Cannabis should not be seen as a steriod or way to gain weight or get cut.  The endocannabinoid system is what cannabis effects more and interacts with as opposed to other systems of the body.
